How To Use ChatGPT to Build Websites

by Fabio Peters

AI website builders and tools like ChatGPT have made it easier than ever to create a website quickly. But after using ChatGPT to build a website for a real-world project, I discovered a hidden problem that almost cost me a client.

The website didn’t look bad. In fact, that was the problem.

The Appeal of Building a Website With ChatGPT

I’ve been building websites for over 20 years. I’ve seen the evolution from Flash websites to mobile-first design, SEO, and now AI-generated content.

I use ChatGPT regularly. It’s an excellent tool for brainstorming, outlining, and accelerating workflows. But I wanted to see what would happen if I relied on it to build an entire website experience, including the structure, messaging, and content.

At first, the results were impressive.

The layout was clean. The copy was polished. Everything looked professional. It felt like I had skipped hours of work.

That’s exactly what made it dangerous.

Why AI-Generated Websites Feel So Convincing

AI tools remove friction. There’s no blank page, no writer’s block, and no endless revisions.

For business owners, that feels like progress.

The problem is that ChatGPT doesn’t understand your business. It doesn’t understand your market positioning, your customer psychology, or what makes someone choose you over a competitor.

It predicts what sounds right.

And sounding right is not the same as being effective.

The Client’s Response Changed Everything

When I presented the website, the client didn’t say it looked bad.

Instead, they said:

“It looks good, but something feels off.”

That sentence revealed the real problem.

Most websites don’t fail because of poor design or slow loading times. They fail because they don’t create trust, clarity, or differentiation.

The website looked professional, but it didn’t give visitors a compelling reason to choose that business.

What ChatGPT Got Wrong

The problem wasn’t technical.

It was strategic.

The messaging was generic. It didn’t create tension, highlight unique value, or guide the visitor toward a decision.

In other words, it filled space with content that sounded correct.

But customers don’t convert because something sounds correct. They convert because something connects.

A Good-Looking Website Is Not Necessarily a Successful Website

This is where many business owners get stuck.

A website can look modern, load quickly, and follow every design trend while still failing to generate leads or sales.

The question every website must answer is simple:

Why should someone choose you instead of someone else?

If your website can’t answer that immediately, everything else becomes less important.

The Hidden Problem With AI-Built Websites

AI tends to average everything out.

It removes sharp edges. It removes strong opinions. It removes differentiation.

Unfortunately, differentiation is exactly what businesses need to compete.

Your website isn’t just a collection of pages. It’s a decision-making environment designed to influence trust and action.

AI understands patterns.

It does not understand human hesitation.

The Real Lesson

We rebuilt the website by focusing on strategy rather than generation.

We clarified the positioning. We sharpened the messaging. We made every decision intentional.

The result wasn’t just a website that looked good.

It was a website that felt right.

ChatGPT didn’t almost cost me a client.

Using ChatGPT without strategy did.

AI is an incredibly powerful tool. Use it to move faster, generate ideas, and improve efficiency. But don’t let it make the strategic decisions that determine whether someone chooses your business.

Because the moment your website starts sounding like everyone else’s, you stop being chosen.
